The good news: Teslas carry gear well once you respect their limits. Here is how to choose between roof and hitch, what each setup costs you in range, and which mounting points your car actually has.

Roof Crossbars: The Foundation

Everything that rides up top starts with a set of roof rack crossbars. They fit both Model 3 and Model Y, but the cars mount differently. The Hitch Route

In this catalog the Model Y tow hitch kit is Model Y only — the Model 3 has no comparable bolt-on option here. A hitch-mounted bike or cargo carrier keeps weight low, loads at waist height, and costs less range than a roof box because it sits in the car's wake rather than punching new air. It is the better choice for heavy bikes and frequent loading. The downsides: it can block the liftgate and hitch carriers are easier targets for theft when you walk away.
