Tesla Winter Prep Checklist: Gear, Range, and Cabin Comfort

Winter is hard on any car, and on an EV it also eats range. The good news: a little preparation protects your interior, keeps the cabin comfortable, and softens the cold-weather range hit. Work through this checklist before the first freeze.

Protect the Interior

Salt, snow, and slush destroy factory carpet mats. Swap them before winter, not after the first storm.

• All-weather TPE floor mats: 100% waterproof, hose-clean, and custom-cut for full coverage including the trunk and frunk. The single most important winter upgrade.
• Alcantara steering wheel cover: a warmer, grippier surface than bare wheel on freezing mornings.

Breathe Cleaner, Defog Faster

Winter means closed windows and the heater on recirculate, which concentrates dust and moisture. A fresh HEPA cabin air filter improves airflow so the system defogs the glass faster and keeps the cabin air clean.

Manage the Range Hit

Cold weather can cut EV range by 20 to 40 percent. You cannot eliminate that, but you can soften it:

1. Precondition while plugged in. Warm the cabin and battery on shore power so you leave with a full charge and a warm pack.
2. Use seat heaters over cabin heat. Heating you is far cheaper than heating the whole cabin.
3. Charge to a higher daily limit. Cold mornings sap standby range, so leave more buffer.
4. Keep the battery above 20 percent. Regenerative braking is limited on a cold or full pack.

Traction and Visibility

• Consider winter tires if you see real snow. No accessory matters more for safety.
• Keep washer fluid rated for sub-freezing temperatures.
• Carry a small snow brush and an emergency kit. An under-seat storage box is a tidy home for it.
